While dining with hubby and my little guy at the South by Mouth Kadayawan Food Fair at SM Lanang Premier on the last day of the Kadayawan Festival last August 21, 2016, I noticed the Kuntaw Mindanao drum circle playing at middle of the fountain court grounds. I went there for awhile to watch closer and listened to the beat of their music.
For a few minutes and in my mind, I imagined myself somewhere transported to a place in the heart of our beloved Mindanao where indigenous music is truly appreciated and much loved as a part of our rich musical culture.

Kuntaw Mindanao is a group of local music artists based in Tagum City in Davao del Norte.
KUNTAW stands for Kreativ Union of Today’s Artists and Writers.
The group is known in Mindanao for their indigenous kind of music that fuses it into different music genres. They have joined various competitions known in the region such as Tunog Mindanao, Musikahan Festival and others. Last year in August 2015, they represented the Philippines in an international music festival that was held in Uzbekistan.
Let’s listen to their music…
Update: This group are friends of Kuntaw from Manila, the Adinkra Lumads Djembe community. They are with Kuntaw in a cultural tour from August 15-25.
