The Philippine Madrigal Singers’ Show at SM City Davao and Concert at SM Lanang Premier

The Philippine Madrigal Singers with their choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio had a wonderful show at SM City Davao last March 4 and had an awesome concert at SM Lanang Premier the following day March 5 as they celebrate their 50th anniversary this year.

Bravo indeed! We were really entertained with their performance last Monday at SM City Davao when they did a show with select local choral groups. It was a great show and the local choral groups who took part of the Mindanao leg of their workshops also showcased their talents.

One of the Philippines’ premier choral groups, winning the European Choral Grand Prix twice in ’97 and ’07 and was designated UNESCO Artists for Peace in 2009.

The Philippine Madrigal Singers was organized in 1963 by National Artist Professor Andrea O. Veneracion. The choir is one of the world’s most awarded, having consistently won all the top prizes in most of the world’s prestigious choral competitions.

Now with the direction of Mark Anthony Carpio, the ensemble continues to perform a wide repertoire of various styles and forms: Renaissance music, Classical music, Filipino and International folksongs, contemporary and Avant-garde music, Opera and even popular music. Their specialization and focus on the madrigal idiom has inspired their unique set-up of singing while seated in a semi-circle, without a conductor. (Source: PhilippineMadrigalSingers.com)

The MADZ sang songs like A Very Special Love, Ikaw At Ako Tayo Ay Pilipino, Iisang Bangka (The Dawn) and One Voice.

The photos are taken with just the Ai5 hence the quality since our camera was left at home when I watched their show at SM City Davao Activity Center.

Last March 5 at SM Lanang Premier Atrium, I along with all those people who came to watch them perform once again were more than entertained with their awesome, wonderful and very entertaining performance as they did their Goin’ for the Gold 50th anniversary outreach concert tour in the SM malls in Davao City.

Spotted in the audience was Wency Cornejo, former lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the rock band Afterimage way back in the ’90s. Popular songs include Next in Line and Habang May Buhay. He is the son of famous news anchor Mel Tiangco. He has made Davao his second home now from what I have heard.

Also in the audience was Park Inn by Radisson Davao General Manager Geir Sikko (no photo).

When the MADZ did their last song, the very delighted audience gave them a standing ovation. The crowd at SM Lanang was a fun and very appreciative audience. The MADZ deserved more than two of the standing ovations they got from the people there. Such amazing voices combined together. The concert was really more fun and entertaining than I expected. BRAVO MADZ!!!

Many of us wished they would continue to perform more songs and they obliged by singing two more songs. I wish my sisters were there watching with me. They would really love to hear them sing live in a concert as well. It was a privilege to watch them perform, thank you SM Lanang Premier and SM City Davao for bringing them here and hosting the venues of their concert and show.

After Davao City, one of the members told us they will be going to New Bataan, Comval and in Tagum City Cultural Center for their Concert for Healing for Victims and Survivors for Typhoon Pablo.

Then they will be leaving for the US – Texas, Columbia South America, Florida, Alabama, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Boston, Washington, New Jersey, and New York are just some of the places they will be performing at spread out from March until June 2013. Concert details of their upcoming North & South American Goodwill Tour are now updated in their website – www.philippinemadrigalsingers.com.
