For the past few years whenever we get to travel to Manila and visit the SM Mall of Asia (MOA), I would pass by IMAX curious of the difference of the usual 3D movie from the IMAX 3D movie experience. We never get to try it in the four IMAX in Manila due to reasons like lack of time to watch a movie.

So you could imagine how we got excited along with other Davaoenos when we learned that the SM Lanang Premier will have an IMAX – the 5th one in the Philippines and the first Mindanao.

We are grateful that we got invited to the blessing and ribbon cutting ceremony of IMAX Lanang and SM Cinema at SM Lanang Premier last September 27, 2012 at six in the evening through Davao Bloggers. Hubby and I also got to watch the special screening of The Avengers in IMAX 3D this time along with other DB peeps. This was a day before SM Lanang Premier officially opened its doors to the public the next day last September 28, 2012.

IMAX 3D is way bigger and better than the usual 3D movie experience I have ever had.  The state-of-the-art polarized glasses that we used at IMAX were bigger than the usual 3D glasses in other 3D cinemas. IMO, I just wish I could have a customized IMAX 3D glasses though that would fit comfortably on me. Well just saying *wink*.

Overall, it was an awesome IMAX experience that I had for the first time. What added to my sentiment was that I experienced IMAX for the first time right here in our very own Davao City at IMAX Lanang in SM Lanang Premier. Before people need to travel to Manila or Cebu to enjoy IMAX, now we have it here in Davao.

Now showing at IMAX Lanang from September 28 to October 16 is Resident Evil: Retribution for P400/ticket. You may want to check this other post for the time schedule – SM Cinema & IMAX Theatre Schedule at SM Lanang Premier Davao City.

Watch out for the upcoming movies to be shown in IMAX Lanang, I got a reply at Twitter from @IMAX_SMCinema “We’ll have Frankenweenie on Oct.17 and Skyfall on Oct.31 at IMAX Lanang.”

Frankenweenie is a film by Tim Burton (Disney) and from the Director of Alice in Wonderland. I am looking forward to watching this on IMAX 3D with my little kid who will have his first ever IMAX 3D experience soon.

I am looking forward to watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX 3D on December 13! I bet my elders sisters would love to watch it with me as well.

And as SM Lanang Premier puts it… there is so much more! Expect more nice movies to look forward to towards the last quarter of 2012.

Know more about IMAX…

SM Cinema introduced the first IMAX Theater in the country on May 21, 2006. The IMAX Theater Mall of Asia is the first IMAX Theater in the Philippines and it is also the one with the BIGGEST IMAX SCREEN IN THE COUNTRY.

IMAX is a technology developed by the Canadian Company IMAX Corporation, the world’s leader in giant-screen projection systems. IMAX is also a pioneer in theater technology as it delivered the first truly large-screen film experience in 1967. Several decades have passed, but IMAX still leads the pack in entertainment technology.

THE TECHNOLOGY

The IMAX experience is achieved through powerful cameras, special projectors, gigantic screens and steeply raked seats. The combination of these different technological innovations enables IMAX to deliver an immersive movie-watching experience. In an IMAX Theatre, you are  not just a mere spectator; you become part of the movie.

THE PROJECTION SYSTEM

The projection system of IMAX is the most advanced in theater technology. With an IMAX projector, the picture and steadiness is beyond normal standards, producing images of incredible clarity. The vividness of the images projected on an IMAX screen is made possible by IMAX’s patented Rolling Loop Technology, with the frame positioned firmly against the rear element of the lens by a vacuum. An IMAX projector utilizes a 15,000-watt lamp, producing light so bright that if you were in the moon, you could see it with the naked eye.

SCREENS

IMAX’s screens are so large it extends beyond your peripheral vision, making you feel you are at the center of the action. They are several times larger compared to the screens in conventional theaters. Some IMAX screens, like the one at IMAX Mall of Asia stands eight stories high allowing it to display larger than life 2D and 3D images. On top of the very large image display, the images are also crystal clear.

DIGITAL SURROUND SOUND SYSTEM

The IMAX patented sound technology produces sound of enhanced depth and clarity. Such wrap-around and realistic sound is made possible by a mighty 12,000-watt digital surround designed by the world’s in sound system design, Sonics Associates Inc.

THEATRE DESIGN

An IMAX Theater is designed to ensure that wherever you sit, you are directly facing the screen. The seats are angled and are steeply raked to make sure that everyone in the audience gets an unobstructed view of the screen. The steep slope of the auditorium ensures that even if a six foot giant is sitting in front of you, you will see over his head.

IMAX 3D

IMAX 3D adds a new dimension to the whole thrilling experience. IMAX makes use of the state-of-the-art polarized glasses. The IMAX 3D process uses separate camera lenses to represent the left and right eyes, thus creating the illusion of depth.
