Alaska Brings Batang Alaska Milk Program to Davao

Alaska’s newest campaign is to promote awareness of the Filipino people regarding stunted growth and underweight for our kids and how it can be prevented. They invited to come to Davao City Ms. Josefina Gonzalez, a registered nutritionist and dietician as resource speaker from the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) to discuss about this and more topics with the Davao media and influencers recently held at the Tiny Kitchen last September 10, 2018. Ms. Gonzalez discussed about the State of Nutrition in the Philippines particularly in the Davao region and provinces along with statistics; as well as the Pinggang Pinoy among others topics discussed.

Ms. Gonzalez emphasized that stunted growth is irreversible so it is important that it should be prevented very early on during a child’s growing years. She also mentioned how important is the kind of nutrition received for a child’s health in his/her first 1,000 days that would affect her state of health for the rest of his/her life.

“Pinggang Pinoy is a relevant food guide for us Filipinos especially for moms like me in using a food plate model to show the recommended proportion by food group in every meal.

Read on to know more from Alaska Milk Corporation about the Media Round Table Discussion held recently in Davao City which aims to support the campaign towards ”Tamang Tangkad At Tamang Bigat” for the benefit the Filipino children.

DAVAO, PHILIPPINES – According to the 2015 Updating of the Nutritional Status of Filipinos developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Philippines (FNRI), 1 out of every 3 children in the Philippines aged 5 to 10 is suffering from stunted growth. Similarly, 1 out of every 3 children aged 5 to 10 years old is underweight.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines stunted growth as the ”failure to reach one’s full potential for growth.” Poor nutrition is one of the many causes of this. This can also result to being underweight or when a child weighs less than the average for their age and height.

Stunted growth as well as being underweight are problems that should not be ignored. If not addressed early, stunted growth may lead to lost productivity and opportunities, and to nutrition-related diseases later in life.
